Crystal Legacy - Generation 3 (Part 8)

Moonstone Crystal has always had her life figured out. A loving family, wonderful friends, and a well-trod, well-loved path into her future. But when her beloved Saffron flees a heartless home, jealousy and anger lead to all of her plans vanishing along with her sight, and she must find a new way to live.

cw: this section contains blood and traumatic injury (amputation, blindness)
Opal: Then you already know what you have to do.

Astral: Yes, I suppose I do. *laugh* I knew I could count on you for reason.

Opal: Comes with raising five kids.
Astral: Yes, I suppose it would! Tell me, Opal, have you lived a good life?

Opal: …I think so. It was hard in some parts, and scary in others, but…I’m happy with how things turned out. I have the best wife, a great family, a wonderful home…I’m content.

Astral: I am glad to hear that. …Trust your instincts, my child. They will not steer you wrong.
Opal: What is that supposed to mean?

Astral: You will see. I will be waiting here for you when it is time, my dear.
*rain falling*

Opal: …mmrgh.
Opal: What did she mean…
Opal: Firefly? You’re up early.

Firefly: A bad feeling. You?

Opal: …A dream. I think.
Firefly: I see.

Opal: What’s wrong?

Firefly: This storm…it came out of nowhere, and…
Firefly: I put a protective charm on the girls when they were young. It just activated.

Opal: Does that mean they’re in danger?

Firefly: It must. I need to wake Spinel, could you–

Opal: Of course.
Opal: Girls, wake up…Moonstone? Where–Horizon, Luna, wake up!

Horizon: …Gramma what…*yawn* What is it?
Opal: Where’s Moonstone?

Horizon: In bed? What time is…it…oh. Uh…
Horizon: Shoot. She must have gone on a run. Hang on…yeah, here it is. “Went out. Meet you at the court.” I’m sure she’s fine.

Opal: …

Horizon: Gramma?
Opal: Get to the court. I have a bad feeling about this…
Horizon: I don’t get it…where is she?

Skye: Somewhere dry, I hope.

Celestial: Hang on…
Celestial: River, have you heard anything? No? Darn. No, Moonstone’s still missing. Her mothers are out looking and…

-

Skye: This isn’t like her. She wasn’t there?

Horizon: She must have left before dawn. I guess she couldn’t sleep…
Horizon: But she’s not answering her texts and I don’t…oh, great.

Skye: Uh, Dad?

Celestial: Hold on, son. I need to make another call.
Celestial: Chili! You haven’t seen Moonstone today, have you? No? I see…

Horizon: Coach!
Chrome: Man, they weren’t kidding about the storms around here.

Absinthe: I sure hope your sister can swim, Crystal.

Horizon: The fudge is that supposed to mean?
Absinthe: Oh, nothing. She just took a dunk in the river, that’s all.

Horizon: What the fudge are you talking about–hey! I’m talking to you, asparagus head. What happened to my sister?
Celestial: Son, in a storm like this those rivers get deadly. If she fell into the water…

Absinthe: Did I say fell? I’m sure she pulled herself out by now.

Horizon: You little–
Horizon: What did you do to my sister?!

Absinthe: Hey! We just had a friendly discussion, that’s all–
Celestial: Horizon!

Horizon: Where is she?!

Absinthe: Keep your crazy–

Celestial: Don’t even finish that. Explain yourself, Absinthe.
Horizon: And make it fudging fast!

Absinthe: I had a talk with your sister and things got heated, okay? She went in the river–it wasn’t raining then.

Horizon: You miserable–argh! Where?!

Absinthe: The canyon outside of town.

Celestial: Watcher be merciful…
Skye: Hori–

Horizon: Call my Moms! Tell them to get into the mines–that’s where the river lets out! …Watcher please let her have gotten out!
*thunder roars*
Moonstone: Ah!
???: Moonstone!
???: Moonstone–Moony, I’m here–look at me–

Moonstone: Who–what’s happening? Where am I?!
???: There’s no time to explain. You need to listen to me–whatever happens, you cannot give up. Do you understand?

Moonstone: What–

???: Do you understand?
Moonstone: I…I understand–who are you?

???: There’s no time. You’re going back there and you need to fight. Fight no matter how much it hurts. I’ll be with you the whole way even if you can’t see me–just fight. Promise me you’ll fight.
Moonstone: What do you mean? What’s going–ah–ow!

???: You’re going back–fight, Moonstone! You keep fighting!
Moonstone: I’ll fight, I’ll fight–oh, Watcher, make it stop–

???: It’ll be over soon. Just hold on.
??? Just hold on.

Moonstone: …ngh…where…
Moonstone: …so dark…hello? *cough* Hello?!
Moonstone: …no one…come on, Crystal…get up. Agh–oh…ow…
Moonstone: *gasping* OKay…come on…come on…
Moonstone: Agh–shiitake, my leg…
Moonstone: Ah–

*thud*

Moonstone: Ngh…I can’t…
Horizon: Moony! Moony, are you in here?!
Horizon: Moony!

Moonstone: …Hori…?
Horizon: Moony–oh, Watcher–hang on, come on, come here–

Moonstone: Hori, I can’t…I can’t see you..

Horizon: What—Moony! Moony, wake up!
Horizon: Moony–Moonstone! Wake up!
Horizon: ….No. No no no you can’t–Moony!
Horizon: Watcher, please, you can’t–

-

Spinel: How did you even find this place?

Luna: Moony found it–Hori! Hori, call out!
Spinel: Horizon!

-

Horizon: Watcher, through your will are we shaped, through your will are we returned to the Light–please, please don’t take her–not yet, not like this–
Horizon: You can’t take her! You can’t–please!
Luna: Hori!

Horizon: Back here! Hurry!
Horizon: Please….please….

Spinel: Oh, Watcher–Moonstone!
Horizon: Mommy, she’s–she’s not waking up…

Firefly: Someone should have been out to inform us by now…

Opal: The damage was severe. It could take hours…
Aurora: I don’t understand it. All this over a stupid ball game?

Horizon: That’s what coach said Banana said to the cops. They needed to win and…Moony wouldn’t let them.
Spinel: So they throw her off the edge of a canyon in the middle of a storm. If I get my hands on those boys…
Dr. Aria: Crystal?

Firefly: Here. How is she, Doctor?

Dr. Aria: I’m afraid I have some bad news.
Dr. Aria: Moonstone is going to live, but her injuries were extensive. We were unable to save her leg and we had to amputate.

Firefly: Oh no…

Spinel: And the head injury? There–there was a lot of blood.
Dr. Aria: It’s still too early to be sure, but…preliminary tests show complete blindness.

Horizon: No…

Firefly: But she–she will live?
Dr. Aria: Yes. And setting those injuries aside, she’s likely to make a full recovery. Things will just be different now.

Aurora: There’s nothing that can be done?

Dr. Aria: We’ve done everything we can.
Spinel: Yeah, you have. But I haven’t.
Opal: Spinel–dammit. Spinel, wait!

Spinel: Don’t try and stop me, Mama. Those boys–

Opal: Moonstone needs you more than she needs revenge.
Spinel: Salt had to pay. So do these idiots and–

Opal: Salt paid through the system. So will they. Spinel, your daughter needs her mothers. Killing them may make you feel better, but it won’t undo this.

Spinel: I…I just…
Spinel: ….I don’t know how to help her, Mama…

Opal: Just be there. Keep her safe, baby. That helps more than you’ll know.
Aspen: All this over a ball game…Watcher, what a mess.
Chrome: Not our fault she couldn’t swim.

Banana: We never meant for it to come to this…
Absinthe: I want a lawyer.

Neptune: You’ll get one. *sigh* Kid…the hell were you thinking?
Neptune: You’d better hope that girl survives, or you’re in for a world of trouble.

Absinthe: It’s her own fault. She could have made it easy on herself.

Neptune: …Yeah. And so could you. Honestly…

Neptune: Any news from the hospital?

Aspen: She made it through surgery. Lost a leg and could be permanently blind, but she’ll live.
Aspen: All this over a stupid ball game, LT?

Neptune: All this over a stupid ball game. *sigh* Poor kid. Whole world’s changed now. Watcher look after her…
That night…

Moonstone: …where…
Firefly: Oh–Moonstone, my darling–do not try and move. How are you feeling?

Moonstone: ….tired…Mama? Why…why can’t I see you? Why are the lights out?

Firefly: Hush, darling, shh. You were…do you remember what happened?
Moonstone: The boys from Honeycomb…they attacked me…said…said I should throw the game…I fell…

Firefly: Over the edge of the canyon and into the river…Moonstone… you…

Moonstone: …I’m blind…aren’t I?
Firefly: I will fetch the doctor. Do not move!

Moonstone: *sigh*
Dr. Aria: Your results came back as I thought they would. Moonstone, the blindness…it is likely to be permanent.

Moonstone: From hitting my head?

Dr. Aria: Yes. The swelling from the head injury damaged your optic nerve beyond repair. Honestly it’s a miracle you’re still alive after that, but…
Firefly: There is truly nothing that can be done?

Dr. Aria: Modern medicine hasn’t come to the point of being able to fix this. I’m very sorry, Mrs. Crystal, but…

Moonstone: When can I go home?

Firefly: Moonstone…
Moonstone: I can be blind back home, Mama. It’s okay.

Dr. Aria: I’d like to keep you for another few days under observation, just to be sure everything else is alright, but…provided your leg takes the prosthetic, you could be going home to rest as early as next week.
Firefly: So soon? I thought…

Dr. Aria: It depends on how she does over the next few days, but patients have been known to recover sooner in their own homes than hospitals. It would do her more good there than here.
Spinel: No, no, it’s good to hear your voice too, sweetheart. How are you feeling? Oof, I bet you’re sore! Just take it easy, okay? Listen to the doctor.
Spinel: Of course I’ll tell the others, and I’ll pass on your love. I love you too, baby. Can you put your Mama back on? Sleep well.
Spinel: Give me the whole story, honey–wait, what do you mean…oh, Watcher. They’re sure? Oh, by her Grace…
Spinel: ‘Fly, easy, easy. We can make some adjustments to the house–they have dogs that help people get around these days. She’ll be fine–Firefly, I promise, we’ll help her out.
Spinel: We’ll do whatever it takes, I promise. …Hey…Hey, I know, I know. Do you want me to switch out with you? Okay. Okay, but call me if anything changes. Yeah. I will. Love you too.
Spinel: Give her my love. Okay. G’night, love.

Artemis: Moomoo?
Spinel: Artemis! What’re you doing out of bed, honey?

Artemis: Moomoo!

Spinel: Moony’s…Moony’ll be home soon, honey.
Artemis: Soon?

Spinel: Yes, honey. She’ll be home soon.
Spinel: And everything’s going to be fine…somehow.
Two weeks later…
Moonstone: There’s really nothing…this is it?

Dr. Aria: I’m afraid so. There are prosthetics designed for high levels of activity, but the blindness…there’s nothing we can do.
Moonstone: But…how can I…

Firefly: …Moonstone…

Dr. Aria: I’m very sorry, Miss Crystal. This isn’t the news I wanted to give you now.
Dr. Aria: But you get to go home today. Remember to take it easy, and your stretches.

Moonstone: …yeah. Yeah, I will.
Firefly: Take it slow, darling…

Moonstone: I can walk, Mama…you don’t have to carry me.
Firefly: I do not mind–step. There is a step.

Moonstone: I–oof…yeah, okay…got it…
Firefly: Are you sure–

Moonstone: I need to do this.
Firefly: Alright. Take it slow.
*door opens*

Luna: Moony!

Moonstone: Guys–
Horizon: It’s okay–it’s okay, we’ve got you.

Luna: You’re home.

Moonstone: Guys…
Aurora: Permanent…Watcher, how is this happening…

Opal: Moonstone…

Horizon: Are you…can we get you anything?

Moonstone: I’m fine.
